The first crochet pattern I ever made was a winter coat. It took me about two weeks to complete. I used a simple chain stitch and double crochet combination to create the body of the coat. I added buttons on the front and back and finished off the sleeves with crocheted cuffs.

Materials Needed

Crochet hook size G (5mm)

Yarn – any color

Step 1: Make the body

Using the pattern provided, make the body of the coat. You may want to use two different colors of yarn for the front and back pieces. I chose to do this using two shades of blue.

The pattern calls for 2 skeins of worsted-weight yarn. I used Blue Sky Alpacas Cotton DK in the colorway ‘Blue Skies’. This is a soft, lightweight cotton yarn that knits up quickly. It’s perfect for beginners who want to try knitting without breaking out in hives.

Step 2: Make the sleeves

Make the sleeves using the same method as the body. The sleeves are made using the same method as making the body. You will need: 1) fabric 2) sewing machine 3) thread 4) scissors 5) iron 6) ruler 7) pins 8) safety pin 9) glue 10) pattern 11) paper 12) pencil 13) cutting mat 14) rotary cutter 15) straight edge 16) seam ripper 17) needle 18) button 19) buttons 20) zipper 21) zippers 22) elastic 23) elastic band 24) sewing machine 25) sewing machine foot 26) sewing machine needles 27) sewing machine thread 28) sewing machine presser feet 29) sewing machine presser foot 30) sewing machine bobbin 31) sewing machine bobbins 32) sewing machine hook 33) sewing machine hems 34) sewing machine hem 35) sewing machine stitches 36) sewing machine

Step 3: Join the sleeve seams

Join the seam at the top of the sleeve. The sleeves on your shirt should fit snugly around your upper arm. They should not slip down when you move your arms. This is because the shoulder seams are joined together at the back of the neck.

Step 4: Add the collar

Add the collar to the coat. The collar is a part of the coat that goes around the neck. It is usually made of leather, wool, cotton, silk, or synthetic materials. Collars come in many shapes and sizes, depending on the type of garment. They may be stiffened or soft, and some collars are removable.

Step 5: Attach the buttons

Attach the buttons to the coat. The buttons were attached to the coat using a buttonhole stitch. This is a simple sewing technique where the needle goes through both layers of fabric and pulls up a loop of thread on each side. It’s used to attach two pieces of material together.
